Are you tired of the 9-5 grind? Are you ready to be your own boss? Whatever the reason you want to quit your 9-5 job, striking out on your own can be a scary proposition.
But it doesn’t have to be.
With a little planning and preparation, you can make the transition from employee to entrepreneur with ease.
Why you may be considering quitting your day job
As someone who escaped the 9-5 and completely transformed her life, I can understand there are many many reasons why you may be considering quitting your day job…
Overworked and underpaid?
Not in control of your own schedule anymore?
Income capped?
Repetitive work?
Stuck in the same environment?
Whilst there are obvious positives, the 9-5 grind can feel like a never-ending cycle of stress and exhaustion, it’s as if you’re not in control of your life anymore. You wake up each morning with a sense of dread, counting down the hours until you can finally collapse into bed at night.
Personally, I felt trapped. It was like playing a computer game; unable to get to the next level so just repeating the same one over and over.

But why does the 9-5 lifestyle feel so scary to quit?
There are a few reasons. First, it’s your comfort zone. You may not be happy with your job, but at least you know what to expect. Quitting means stepping into the unknown, and that can be daunting.
Second, quitting also means giving up a steady income, which can be a scary prospect when the bills are piling up.
Finally, we often have a fear of failure when it comes to pursuing our dreams. We worry that if we leave our jobs, we’ll never find another one that makes us happy or fulfils our needs. Essentially we’re all terrified of disappointment and regret.
However, sometimes taking that leap of faith is the best way to find true happiness. So if you’re feeling trapped by the 9-5 lifestyle, don’t be afraid to take a chance and pursue your passions.
The benefits of working for yourself
Working for yourself has a number of amazing benefits. For one, you’ll be your own boss. This means you’ll have the freedom to set your own hours, work on the projects you’re passionate about, and take a vacation when you want – once you have established your new independent career, of course. It’s worth mentioning that for some it may be a long road until you match your 9-5 income, but if the passion and drive are there, it’s 100% possible – it took me about a year.
Depending on your new industry/career/business, other benefits can include:
- Remote working – meaning you can work and travel, as essentially YOU decide where you want to work from
- Higher potential for earning more – no income cap or asking a boss for an increase
- Better job satisfaction
- No more office gossip, annoying desk buddies or poor teamplayers
- No two days are the same
Personally for me, waking up every day and feeling like you’re living your purpose, is a feeling that a 9-5 salary simply can’t buy! Additionally, being self-employed and building something from scratch can provide a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment.

The challenges you may face when quitting your day job
Of course, there are also challenges that come with quitting your day job. For one, you’ll likely have to give up a regular paycheck and benefits.
Additionally, you’ll need to be self-motivated and organized, as there will be no one else telling you what to do or when to do it. This was my biggest struggle. As much as I disliked being micro-managed, when it came to quitting my 9-5 job, I realised how dependent I had become on being supported. This was my key reason for hiring support in the form of a mentor.
If you feel like you need support throughout this transition, I can help. Click here to book a free call with me, or use the booking form at the bottom of this post.
Finally, you’ll need to be prepared for the ups and downs that come with being your own boss – there will be good days and bad days, there will be brand new things you need to learn, your own tax to sort, but as long as you stay focused and motivated, you can be successful.
Your 9-5 Exit Strategy: Making the transition from employee to entrepreneur
First, start saving up money so you have a financial cushion. There is no exact amount that is recommended, this is down to you to decide, as it depends on your living costs, how many people are dependable on you, etc.
Next, create a business plan to help you organize your thoughts and set goals. Setting goals is so important if you want to succeed. Without goals, you will have no way of measuring your progress or determining whether you are on track to reach your desired destination.
Furthermore, goals can help to keep you motivated and focused on the task at hand. They can provide a much-needed sense of direction when you feel lost or uncertain, and they can give you a sense of pride and accomplishment when you reach them.
Finally, tell your support network about your plans so they can provide support and advice. With a little planning and preparation, you can be successful as a self-employed individual.

How to support yourself financially during the transition
One of the most important aspects of creating an exit strategy is figuring out how you’ll support yourself financially during the transition. This may seem like a daunting task, but it’s important to have a plan.
There are a few options for supporting yourself financially during the transition. As mentioned above, one option is to save up a load of money ahead of time. This will give you a cushion to fall back on as you adjust to your new situation.
However, if (like I was) you’re keen to leave asap, I’d still recommend saving something, but another option is to look into other sources of income.
This could include freelance work, part-time work, or even starting a side hustle whilst in your 9-5 job (legalities permitted of course).

Ultimately, there are a lot of things to consider before quitting your day job. But if you’re prepared for the challenges and willing to work hard, it can be a rewarding experience. With a little planning and preparation, you can be successful as a self-employed individual.
