Many people are affected by Imposter Syndrome and it can be detrimental to an individuals ability to perform and succeed. If you’re reading this article, I’ve no doubt that you have probably experienced it too.
I have on MANY occasions, and despite being a certified Life Coach helping my clients to challenge and overcome imposter syndrome, it’s still something I consistently work on so that I can recode Imposter Syndrome when it strikes – and I advise you to combat it as well.
Thats exactly what this article is about. I want to help you overcome Imposter Syndrome, with a few tips and a whole tapping ritual…
What is Imposter Syndrome?
To put it simply, Imposter Syndrome is when you feel like a fraud. When experiencing Imposter Syndrome, you can feel as though at any moment you will be discovered as an imposter, and that the only reason you got where you are is down to luck.
It’s an over whelming feeling of self-doubt and a fear of being exposed. And it can be crippling. It can stop many of us DEAD in our tracks and instead of powering onto success we end up turning around and running for the door.
The 5 Types of Imposter Syndrome
Yes, there isn’t just one type of Imposter Syndrome, there are five different types. Imposter Syndrom expert Dr Valerie Young, after undergoing much research, was able to divide the syndrome into five types…
I’m keen to know, which Imposter syndrome type are you?

The Perfectionist
The Perfectionist sets an extremely high goal, and then when they fail to reach it (despite doing some incredible work to get there) their minds are flooded with self-doubt and internal criticism. They can have a need to be in control, meaning rather than delegate work to others, they would rather carry the burden of doing EVERYTHING themselves, so that they can remain in full control.
Quite often they need their work to be “perfect” and if they don’t believe it to be “perfect” they don’t deem it good enough to even go out into the world, resulting in so much beautiful work being kept hidden away.
Tip for the Perfectionist: Write out a list of 5 times you’ve failed and then assess how these failures may have helped you grow and shaped you into the FABULOUS person you are today. Because once you understand that you can fail your way to the top (because failures are really just lessons) you can slow down striving for ‘perfect’.

The Natural Genius
The Natural Genius sees outside help as a weakness, they have always held themselves to an extremely high standard and don’t enjoy falling behind or being second best. If they aren’t the first to complete a task, they immediately tell themselves they must not be good at it.
Tip for the Natural Genius: Remind yourself as often as you can (an affirmation perhaps?) you don’t need to be the best at everything in order to succeed in life. Being present and enjoying the learning and the work you do – that can be fun too!

The Superhuman
The Superhuman works exceptionally hard, going above and beyond, including working late nights, maybe even weekends, because they don’t believe they are at the same skill level as everyone else.
God might love a tryer’ but not when it’s damaging to ones mental health. But the Superhuman truly believes that doing just the work that is required of them, won’t be good enough. They feel the need to make up for some kind of shortcomings. It’s basically a lack of belief in the skills they can offer.
Tip for the Superhuman: Take time off regularly and switch off your tech when doing so, completely restricting yourself from your work/goals.

The Expert
The Expert believes they need to know everything, every little detail, about the topic they are covering. Their fear is not having all the answers; they dread someone asking them a question that they don’t have the exact perfect response – this could expose them as a fraud!
The Expert is usually someone who gets certification after certification to prove their worth and knowledge to others, yet as the certificates builds up, they can still find themselves feeling inadequate if they don’t match up 100% to the requirements needed, putting themselves down in the process.
Tip for the Expert: Embrace free learning opportunities – such as podcasts or TedTalks on YouTube – and try to put learnings from these free educators into practice to show yourself how real-time learning can be just as, if not more, practical to your every day life.

The Soloist
The Soloist will refuse to ask for help from others. The Soloist believes that if they ask for help it will reveal them to be a fraud and completely expose the fact that they don’t deserve to be where they are.
Instead, they will continuously struggle on their own in a bid to prove their worth and not be discovered as an imposter, even if it means their work suffering as a result.
Tip for the Soloist: Step out your comfort zone and make a commitment to connect with a member of your team or collaborate with another in your circle/industry, to encourage you to open up and ask for help – yes, even when you feel like you don’t need help, ask anyway!
Which Imposter Syndrome type do you relate to the most? It may be more than one. Personally, I feel a combo of the Superhuman and the Soloist!
